A radiant, white smile can be a game-changer. It can transform your appearance, boost your self-esteem, and make you feel ready to take on the world. Tooth whitening is a popular choice for achieving this transformation, but it’s important to understand that the existing colour of your teeth and the nature of your stains play a crucial role in determining if you’re a suitable candidate for this procedure.

Understanding Your Tooth Colour

We all dream of having pearly white teeth, but the reality is that natural tooth colour varies greatly from person to person. Some of us have teeth that are naturally more yellow, while others might have a greyish hue. Your unique tooth colour can significantly influence the effectiveness of tooth whitening.

For instance, yellowish teeth tend to respond well to whitening, while brownish or greyish teeth may require more intensive treatments or may not respond as well. Understanding your natural tooth colour will help set realistic expectations for the outcome of the whitening process.

Why Existing Tooth Colour and Stains Are Critical for Tooth WhiteningThe Nature of Your Stains

Not all stains are created equal. There are two main types of tooth stains: extrinsic and intrinsic.

Extrinsic Stains

Extrinsic tooth stains are discolorations that occur on the outer surface of the teeth. These stains primarily affect the enamel—the hard, outermost layer of the tooth. Extrinsic stains are typically caused by external factors and can vary in color and severity. Here are some common causes and characteristics of extrinsic tooth stains:

Causes of Extrinsic Tooth Stains:

  1. Dietary Factors: Consuming foods and beverages with strong pigments, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and certain fruits and berries, can lead to extrinsic stains over time.
  2. Tobacco Use: Smoking or using smokeless tobacco products can result in yellow or brown stains on the teeth.
  3. Poor Oral Hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing can allow plaque and tartar buildup, which can contribute to extrinsic staining.
  4. Inadequate Dental Care: Skipping regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings can lead to the accumulation of surface stains.
  5. Medications: Some medications, such as certain antipsychotics and antihypertensives, may cause extrinsic staining as a side effect.
  6. Aging: As enamel naturally wears down over time, teeth may become more susceptible to extrinsic staining.
  7. Environmental Factors: Exposure to environmental pollutants and chemicals can contribute to tooth discoloration.

Characteristics of Extrinsic Tooth Stains:

  1. Surface Location: Extrinsic stains are located on the outer enamel surface of the teeth.
  2. Colour Variations: Extrinsic stains can appear as various colours, including yellow, brown, black, or greenish hues.
  3. Superficial Nature: These stains typically affect only the outermost layer of the tooth and do not penetrate deep into the tooth structure.
  4. Reversible: Extrinsic stains are often reversible through professional dental cleanings or teeth-whitening procedures.
  5. May Cause Roughness: In some cases, extrinsic staining can make the tooth surface feel rough or textured.

Intrinsic Stains

Intrinsic tooth stains, also known as internal tooth discolouration, are stains that originate from within the tooth’s structure. Unlike extrinsic stains, which affect the tooth’s outer enamel layer and can often be removed with proper dental hygiene or teeth whitening procedures, intrinsic stains are more challenging to eliminate.

Common causes of intrinsic tooth stains include:

  1. Dental Trauma: A blow to the tooth can cause internal bleeding or nerve damage, leading to discolouration. Over time, the affected tooth may darken or turn grey.
  2. Certain Medications: Some medications, particularly antibiotics like tetracycline and minocycline, can cause intrinsic staining when taken during tooth development, such as in childhood.
  3. Dental Fluorosis: Excessive fluoride intake during tooth development, usually due to high fluoride levels in drinking water or fluoride supplements, can lead to intrinsic staining characterised by white or brown spots on the teeth.
  4. Tooth Decay: Severe tooth decay or dental caries can cause intrinsic discolouration when the infection reaches the inner dentin layer of the tooth.
  5. Age-Related Changes: As people age, the dentin layer of the teeth naturally darkens and can become more visible through the translucent enamel, leading to intrinsic discolouration.
  6. Genetics: Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to have teeth with a certain degree of intrinsic staining.
  7. Root Canal Treatment: Teeth that have undergone root canal therapy may appear slightly darker than surrounding teeth due to the absence of blood flow to the treated tooth.

Addressing intrinsic tooth stains often requires more extensive dental treatments than extrinsic stains. These treatments may include:

  • Professional Whitening: While traditional teeth whitening methods may not be as effective for intrinsic stains, dentists can use stronger whitening agents and techniques for improvement.
  • Porcelain Veneers: For severe or persistent intrinsic staining, porcelain veneers can be applied to the tooth’s front surface to cover the discoloration.
  • Composite Bonding: In some cases, composite resin bonding can be used to mask intrinsic stains, providing a more affordable solution than veneers.

The Role of Your Dentist

Your dentist is your partner in the journey towards a brighter smile. We will assess your tooth colour and the nature of your stains to determine the most effective whitening approach for you. If you have stubborn intrinsic stains, we may recommend alternative treatments, such as veneers or crowns, to achieve the desired result.

Fantastic dentists. The reception team are always polite and helpful. I have had a number of dentists in the 20 years I have been a customer and all have been brilliant. I am currently with Holly who is amazing and has done a wonderful job with my Invisalign and then a few cosmetic changes. She has a great assistant too, which makes a usually stressful experience into a fun one. Highly recommend.

I'm a wuss when it comes to going to the dentist, but I've just had my smile spruced up by the hygienist, Sinead (hope I've spelt that right) and Sherron (hope I've got that right too) who both put me at ease with their banter and turned me out looking 10 years younger. Thanks Derrol

This is the best dental care I’ve ever received. I’m fearful patient dentist (Sophie) has always found a way to calm my anxiety and never rushed me. I asked that if it was possible for them not to tell me what they were doing if possible legally (obviously they have to tell me some things) and i know it’s silly but she didn’t make me feel silly and agreed. I have disabilities too which make laying in the chair uncomfortable but we worked out a system of me lifting my hand if I need to move while she’s working on me. My fears have always been taken into consideration and I’ve never been made to feel bad because of them (childhood trauma yay). They give me distraction techniques and said they’d stop if it got too much (so far not needed to do that). Even after telling them I’d need to be referred to hospital because of one of my conditions for extraction procedures they were great and told me that fine. I’ll never go anywhere else now. Thank you Sophie for helping get over my fears without making me feel like a baby
