After undergoing a teeth whitening treatment, it’s important to take certain precautions to maintain the results and protect your oral health. Here are some things you should avoid doing immediately after whitening your teeth:

  1. 7 Things Not to Do After Teeth WhiteningAvoid Staining Foods and Drinks: After teeth whitening, it’s essential to steer clear of foods and beverages known to stain teeth. Dark-coloured liquids like coffee, red wine, and tea, as well as foods such as berries and soy sauce, can compromise the whiteness of your teeth. If you do consume these items, consider using a straw to minimise contact with your teeth, and rinse your mouth with water afterward.
  2. No Smoking: Smoking is one of the most significant contributors to tooth discolouration and poses severe health risks. Besides staining teeth, smoking can lead to gum disease and oral cancer. Quitting smoking is not only beneficial for preserving your whitened smile but also for your overall health.
  3. Steer Clear of Acidic Foods: Acidic foods and beverages, such as citrus fruits and vinegar-based dressings, can weaken tooth enamel over time. Enamel is essential for protecting your teeth from stains and decay. While these foods are nutritious, consume them in moderation and consider rinsing your mouth with water afterward.
  4. Don’t Skip Oral Hygiene: Maintaining a consistent oral hygiene routine is crucial for preserving your bright smile. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily helps prevent the buildup of plaque and stains. Consider using a whitening toothpaste recommended by our dentist to help maintain your teeth’s whiteness.
  5. Avoid Abrasive Toothpaste: Some toothpaste can be abrasive and may wear down enamel, especially immediately after teeth whitening. Opt for a gentle toothpaste and use a soft-bristle toothbrush to protect your enamel while maintaining your oral hygiene.
  6. Limit Alcohol: Alcoholic beverages can lead to dehydration, reducing saliva production. A dry mouth is more susceptible to staining and tooth decay. Moderation is key when consuming alcohol to maintain a moist and althy mouth.
  7. Avoid Overuse of Whitening Products: Excessive use of over-the-counter whitening products can lead to tooth sensitivity and enamel damage. It’s important to follow our dentist’s recommendations for at-home maintenance and avoid overdoing it with whitening treatments.

Effects of Whitening on Your Enamel

When used correctly, teeth whitening treatments are generally safe and do not cause significant damage to enamel. However, there are a few potential effects to consider:

  1. Tooth Sensitivity: Teeth whitening can temporarily increase tooth sensitivity, especially to cold or hot stimuli. This sensitivity is usually mild and transient, subsiding shortly after the treatment.
  2. Softening of Enamel: Some studies suggest that high-concentration bleaching agents may cause temporary softening of enamel. However, this softening is reversible, and the enamel naturally remineralises and regains its normal hardness.
  3. Gum Irritation: In some cases, teeth whitening treatments may cause temporary gum irritation or sensitivity. This can occur if the bleaching agent comes into contact with the gums or if the whitening trays do not fit properly.

It’s important to note that the potential effects mentioned above are temporary and typically resolve on their own without causing long-term harm to the enamel.

Safeguarding Your Enamel during Teeth Whitening

To minimise any potential risks and protect your enamel during teeth whitening, consider the following recommendations:

  1. Consult with Our Dentist: Before undergoing any teeth whitening treatment, it is advisable to consult with our dentist. We will evaluate your oral health, discuss your goals, and recommend the most suitable whitening method for you.
  2. Follow Instructions: If using over-the-counter whitening products, carefully follow the instructions provided. Avoid excessive or prolonged use, as it can increase the risk of tooth sensitivity or enamel erosion.
  3. Professional Supervision: Opting for professional teeth whitening treatments ensures that the procedure is carried out under the supervision of a dental professional. They can customise the treatment based on your specific needs and monitor your oral health throughout the process.
  4. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and visit us regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings. Good oral hygiene supports the health and strength of your enamel.

My dentist Sophie was absolutely fantastic she took really good care of me And got me out of pain in no time and she was very thorough And I couldn’t thank you enough for what she had done for me. Fantastic dentists. The reception team are always polite and helpful. I have had a number of dentists in the 20 years I have been a customer and all have been brilliant. I am currently with Holly who is amazing and has done a wonderful job with my Invisalign and then a few cosmetic changes. She has a great assistant too, which makes a usually stressful experience into a fun one. Highly recommend.

I'm a wuss when it comes to going to the dentist, but I've just had my smile spruced up by the hygienist, Sinead (hope I've spelt that right) and Sherron (hope I've got that right too) who both put me at ease with their banter and turned me out looking 10 years younger. Thanks Derrol

This is the best dental care I’ve ever received. I’m fearful patient but.my dentist (Sophie) has always found a way to calm my anxiety and never rushed me. I asked that if it was possible for them not to tell me what they were doing if possible legally (obviously they have to tell me some things) and i know it’s silly but she didn’t make me feel silly and agreed. I have disabilities too which make laying in the chair uncomfortable but we worked out a system of me lifting my hand if I need to move while she’s working on me. My fears have always been taken into consideration and I’ve never been made to feel bad because of them (childhood trauma yay). They give me distraction techniques and said they’d stop if it got too much (so far not needed to do that). Even after telling them I’d need to be referred to hospital because of one of my conditions for extraction procedures they were great and told me that fine. I’ll never go anywhere else now. Thank you Sophie for helping get over my fears without making me feel like a baby
