When it comes to dental fillings, patients often have a choice between silver fillings (amalgam) and white fillings (composite resin). Both types have their advantages and considerations, and the best choice depends on various factors. Let’s compare silver fillings and white fillings to help you make an informed decision.

What Are Silver Fillings?

Silver Filling vs White Filling Which Type Is BestSilver fillings, also known as amalgam fillings, are a type of dental restoration used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay or minor fractures. Unlike tooth-coloured composite resin fillings, silver fillings are composed of a mixture of metals, with the primary components being mercury, silver, tin, and copper.

Here are some key characteristics and features of silver fillings (amalgam):

  1. Strength and Durability: Amalgam fillings are known for their strength and durability. They can withstand the forces of chewing and can last for many years.
  2. Cost-Effective: Silver fillings are generally more cost-effective than other filling materials, making them an affordable option for many patients.
  3. Quick Placement: The placement of amalgam fillings is typically a quicker process than that of composite resin fillings. They require less meticulous layering and curing.
  4. Longevity: Amalgam fillings have a long track record of reliability and can endure for decades when properly cared for.
  5. Visible Appearance: One drawback of silver fillings is their visible appearance. They do not blend with the natural tooth colour and are easily noticeable when you smile or speak, especially in visible areas of the mouth.
  6. Expansion and Contraction: Amalgam fillings may expand and contract slightly with temperature changes in the mouth. Over time, this may lead to cracks or fractures in the tooth structure.
  7. Mercury Content: Amalgam fillings contain mercury, which has raised concerns about potential health risks. However, numerous studies have shown that the mercury in amalgam fillings is generally safe for most people when properly placed and maintained.
  8. Tooth Preparation: Silver fillings often require more extensive tooth preparation than composite resin fillings. This means that more healthy tooth structure may need to be removed to accommodate the filling.
  9. Aesthetic Considerations: Due to their visible appearance and metallic colour, many patients prefer tooth-coloured fillings for a more natural look.

What Are White Fillings?

What Are Composite Resin Fillings - Anderson & BroadberryWhite fillings, also known as tooth-coloured fillings or composite resin fillings, are a type of dental restoration used to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay, minor fractures, or other issues. Unlike traditional silver fillings (amalgam), white fillings are designed to closely match the colour and appearance of natural teeth, providing a more aesthetically pleasing and discreet option.

Here are some key characteristics and features of white fillings:

  1. Aesthetic Appeal: White fillings are highly regarded for their ability to blend seamlessly with the natural colour of the patient’s teeth. This makes them an ideal choice for visible teeth, as they provide a virtually invisible restoration.
  2. Customisation: The composite resin used for white fillings can be custom-matched to the shade and colour of the patient’s surrounding teeth. This level of customisation ensures that the filling is virtually indistinguishable from the natural tooth.
  3. Versatility: White fillings can be used for both front and back teeth, making them a versatile option for various dental restorations.
  4. Conservative Preparation: White fillings require minimal removal of healthy tooth structure during placement. This conservative approach helps preserve more of the natural tooth.
  5. Adhesive Bonding: Composite resin fillings bond chemically to the tooth structure, which enhances their strength and stability. This adhesive quality allows for a more secure and durable restoration.
  6. Reduced Sensitivity: White fillings can help reduce tooth sensitivity, which can be a common issue with other filling materials, such as silver amalgam.
  7. Quick and Efficient Placement: The placement of white fillings is typically completed in one dental visit. The material is applied in layers, with each layer being cured (hardened) using a special light. This process allows for precise shaping and contouring.
  8. Repairable: If a white filling becomes damaged or worn over time, it can be easily repaired or replaced by a dentist without the need for complete replacement.
  9. Biocompatible: Composite resin fillings are considered biocompatible, as they do not contain mercury or other potentially harmful metals found in amalgam fillings.
  10. Aesthetic Enhancement: In addition to restoring dental health, white fillings can also be used for cosmetic purposes, such as repairing minor chips or improving tooth shape.

Which Option to Select?

  • Aesthetic Considerations: One of the significant advantages of white fillings is their aesthetic appeal. They blend seamlessly with the natural colour of your teeth, making them virtually indistinguishable. This makes composite fillings an excellent choice for visible areas, such as the front teeth, where a natural appearance is desired. On the other hand, silver fillings are more noticeable due to their metallic colour and may be more suitable for areas less visible when smiling or talking.
  • Durability and Longevity: In terms of durability, silver fillings have a long-standing reputation for their strength and longevity. They can withstand the forces of chewing and grinding, making them a reliable option for large restorations in areas with heavy biting forces. While composite fillings have improved in durability over the years, they may not be as durable as silver fillings, especially for larger restorations or areas with high chewing forces. However, advancements in composite materials have increased their durability, making them a suitable choice for many patients.
  • Cost Considerations: The cost of the filling material is another factor to consider. Silver fillings tend to be more cost-effective compared to white fillings. This can make amalgam fillings a preferred choice for individuals with budget constraints. However, it’s important to remember that the cost may vary depending on the size and location of the restoration, as well as other individual factors.

Fantastic dentists. The reception team are always polite and helpful. I have had a number of dentists in the 20 years I have been a customer and all have been brilliant. I am currently with Holly who is amazing and has done a wonderful job with my Invisalign and then a few cosmetic changes. She has a great assistant too, which makes a usually stressful experience into a fun one. Highly recommend.

I'm a wuss when it comes to going to the dentist, but I've just had my smile spruced up by the hygienist, Sinead (hope I've spelt that right) and Sherron (hope I've got that right too) who both put me at ease with their banter and turned me out looking 10 years younger. Thanks Derrol

This is the best dental care I’ve ever received. I’m fearful patient but.my dentist (Sophie) has always found a way to calm my anxiety and never rushed me. I asked that if it was possible for them not to tell me what they were doing if possible legally (obviously they have to tell me some things) and i know it’s silly but she didn’t make me feel silly and agreed. I have disabilities too which make laying in the chair uncomfortable but we worked out a system of me lifting my hand if I need to move while she’s working on me. My fears have always been taken into consideration and I’ve never been made to feel bad because of them (childhood trauma yay). They give me distraction techniques and said they’d stop if it got too much (so far not needed to do that). Even after telling them I’d need to be referred to hospital because of one of my conditions for extraction procedures they were great and told me that fine. I’ll never go anywhere else now. Thank you Sophie for helping get over my fears without making me feel like a baby
