Tooth-coloured fillings have revolutionised dental care by providing a natural and aesthetically pleasing solution for cavities and tooth decay. These fillings, also known as composite fillings, are made from a mixture of plastic and glass materials that closely resemble the colour and texture of natural teeth. While they are commonly used for front teeth due to their cosmetic benefits, tooth-coloured fillings are increasingly being used on back teeth as well. In this article, we will explore the usage of tooth-coloured fillings on back teeth, their advantages, and considerations to keep in mind. So, how is tooth-coloured fillings being used on back teeth?

How is tooth-coloured fillings being used on back teethThe Benefits of Tooth-Coloured Fillings on Back Teeth

Using tooth-coloured fillings on back teeth offers several advantages over traditional amalgam fillings. These benefits include:

  1. Aesthetic Appeal: Unlike silver amalgam fillings, tooth-coloured fillings blend seamlessly with the natural colour of your teeth. This makes them an ideal choice for individuals who value a natural and attractive smile.
  2. Conservative Approach: Tooth-coloured fillings require minimal tooth structure removal, allowing dentists to preserve as much healthy tooth as possible. This conservative approach helps maintain the integrity and strength of the tooth in the long run.
  3. Bonding Capabilities: Tooth-coloured fillings bond chemically to the tooth structure, creating a strong and durable seal. This bonding property helps to restore the tooth’s strength and prevent further decay.
  4. Versatility: Tooth-coloured fillings can be used to address a wide range of dental issues on back teeth, including cavities, chips, cracks, and worn enamel. Dentists can precisely shape and contour the filling material to restore the tooth’s natural form and function.
  5. Reduced Sensitivity: Tooth-coloured fillings are less likely to cause tooth sensitivity compared to amalgam fillings. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who experience discomfort or sensitivity when consuming hot or cold food and drinks.
  6. Mercury-Free: Amalgam fillings contain mercury, which has raised concerns over its potential health risks. Tooth-coloured fillings, on the other hand, are free from mercury, offering a safer alternative for dental restorations.

Factors to Consider

While tooth-coloured fillings on back teeth have numerous advantages, there are a few factors to consider before opting for this treatment option. These factors include:

  • Size of the Cavity: Tooth-coloured fillings are best suited for small to medium-sized cavities. In cases of larger or more extensive cavities, alternative restorative options may be recommended.
  • Bite Pressure: Back teeth endure more chewing forces compared to front teeth. Dentists evaluate the bite pressure and location of the cavity to determine if tooth-coloured fillings are a suitable choice. In some cases, other restorative materials such as porcelain or gold may be more appropriate.
  • Cost: Tooth-coloured fillings tend to be more expensive than amalgam fillings due to the materials used and the specialised techniques involved. It is essential to discuss the cost implications with your dentist and consider your budget when making a decision.
  • Staining Potential: While tooth-coloured fillings are highly resistant to staining, they may discolour over time, especially if exposed to substances like coffee, tea, or tobacco. Regular dental hygiene practices and avoiding excessive consumption of staining agents can help maintain the appearance of the fillings.

Fantastic dentists. The reception team are always polite and helpful. I have had a number of dentists in the 20 years I have been a customer and all have been brilliant. I am currently with Holly who is amazing and has done a wonderful job with my Invisalign and then a few cosmetic changes. She has a great assistant too, which makes a usually stressful experience into a fun one. Highly recommend.

I'm a wuss when it comes to going to the dentist, but I've just had my smile spruced up by the hygienist, Sinead (hope I've spelt that right) and Sherron (hope I've got that right too) who both put me at ease with their banter and turned me out looking 10 years younger. Thanks Derrol

This is the best dental care I’ve ever received. I’m fearful patient dentist (Sophie) has always found a way to calm my anxiety and never rushed me. I asked that if it was possible for them not to tell me what they were doing if possible legally (obviously they have to tell me some things) and i know it’s silly but she didn’t make me feel silly and agreed. I have disabilities too which make laying in the chair uncomfortable but we worked out a system of me lifting my hand if I need to move while she’s working on me. My fears have always been taken into consideration and I’ve never been made to feel bad because of them (childhood trauma yay). They give me distraction techniques and said they’d stop if it got too much (so far not needed to do that). Even after telling them I’d need to be referred to hospital because of one of my conditions for extraction procedures they were great and told me that fine. I’ll never go anywhere else now. Thank you Sophie for helping get over my fears without making me feel like a baby
