What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns, often referred to as dental caps, are custom-made restorations that cover and encase a natural tooth or dental implant. These tooth-shaped “caps” are placed over the visible portion of a tooth to restore its strength, functionality, and aesthetics.
Who Needs Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are a versatile and beneficial dental treatment option suitable for a wide range of individuals who may be experiencing various dental issues.
Tooth Decay: When a tooth has extensive decay or cavities that cannot be adequately restored with a dental filling, a crown can be placed to strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure.
Cracked or Fractured Teeth: Teeth that are cracked or fractured due to injury, accidents, or extensive wear may require crowns to prevent further damage and restore their integrity.
Large Fillings: Teeth with large fillings that have deteriorated or weakened over time may benefit from crowns to provide added support and protection.
Root Canal Treatment: After a root canal procedure to treat infected or damaged tooth pulp, a crown is often placed to seal and protect the treated tooth, preventing reinfection and restoring function.
Misshapen or Discoloured Teeth: Dental crowns can be used to improve the appearance of teeth that are misshapen, severely discoloured, or have aesthetic imperfections, creating a more attractive and uniform smile.
Weak or Worn Teeth: Teeth that have been weakened due to grinding, bruxism, or excessive wear may require crowns to reinforce and strengthen them, reducing the risk of further damage.
Tooth Support for Dental Bridges: Crowns serve as abutments (anchor teeth) for dental bridges, helping to bridge the gap left by missing teeth and restore proper biting and chewing function.
Implant Restorations: Dental crowns are used as the visible part of dental implants, replacing missing teeth. They provide a natural-looking and functional tooth replacement option.
Children with Severe Tooth Decay: In some cases, children with severe tooth decay may require dental crowns on their primary (baby) teeth to preserve their functionality until permanent teeth erupt.
Cosmetic Enhancements: Individuals seeking cosmetic improvements may choose dental crowns to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing smile by addressing issues like tooth shape, size, and colour.
Prevention of Tooth Fracture: Teeth that are at risk of fracturing due to factors like a history of multiple fillings or weakened enamel can be protected with crowns.
Orthodontic Treatment: In orthodontic cases, dental crowns may be used to reshape and align teeth as part of the overall treatment plan.
The Benefits of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns offer a multitude of benefits, making them a versatile and valuable solution in restorative and cosmetic dentistry. Here are the key advantages of dental crowns:
Tooth Protection: Dental crowns provide a protective shield for damaged or weakened teeth, preventing further deterioration and the need for extraction.
Restored Functionality: Crowns restore the functionality of damaged or decayed teeth, enabling patients to bite, chew, and speak with ease and confidence.
Aesthetic Enhancement: Crowns are customised to match the color, shape, and size of natural teeth, improving the overall appearance of the smile and concealing imperfections.
Longevity: With proper care and maintenance, dental crowns can last for many years, offering a durable and long-lasting solution.
Versatility: Crowns are versatile and can address various dental concerns, from tooth decay and fractures to cosmetic enhancements and structural support.
Preservation of Natural Teeth: Crowns preserve the natural tooth structure, reducing the need for more invasive treatments like extractions.
Comfort: Crowns restore the comfort of chewing and speaking, allowing individuals to enjoy a wide range of foods and communicate clearly.
Stability for Dental Bridges: Crowns serve as stable anchor points for dental bridges, replacing missing teeth and maintaining proper tooth alignment.
Protection After Root Canal: Following a root canal procedure, a crown is placed to seal and protect the treated tooth, preventing reinfection.
Improved Self-Confidence: Aesthetic crowns can significantly boost self-confidence by enhancing the appearance of the smile.
Resistance to Stains: Dental crowns, particularly those made from porcelain or ceramic, are resistant to stains, helping to maintain a bright and vibrant smile.
Natural-Looking Results: Crowns are designed to replicate the natural appearance of teeth, ensuring a seamless blend with the surrounding dentition.
Customisation: Each crown is customised to meet the unique needs and preferences of the patient, ensuring a personalised and natural-looking result.
Restoration of Dental Implants: Crowns are used as the visible portion of dental implants, providing a stable and functional tooth replacement option.
Quick and Predictable Treatment: The process of getting dental crowns is relatively quick and predictable, offering efficient and reliable results.
Minimisation of Tooth Sensitivity: Crowns can help reduce tooth sensitivity by covering exposed dentin or nerve endings.
The Process of Getting Your Crowns
The process of getting dental crowns at Anderson & Broadberry Dental Care involves several steps to ensure a precise fit, optimal functionality, and aesthetic harmony with the patient’s natural teeth. Here is an overview of the typical process for obtaining dental crowns:
Initial Consultation: The journey begins with a consultation with one of our dentists in Swallownest, Sheffield. During this appointment, you will discuss your dental concerns, treatment options, and your goals for the outcome.
Examination and X-Rays: Our dentist will conduct a thorough examination of the tooth that requires a crown. X-rays may be taken to assess the extent of damage or decay and to check the health of the tooth’s roots.
Treatment Planning: Based on the examination and diagnostic findings, the dentist will create a personalised treatment plan, outlining the need for a dental crown and the specific type of crown recommended.
Tooth Preparation: To accommodate the dental crown, the affected tooth will be prepared. This typically involves removing a small portion of the outer layer of the tooth, including any decayed or damaged areas. Local anaesthesia is usually administered to ensure a pain-free procedure.
Impression: Once the tooth is prepared, an impression or digital scan of the tooth and the surrounding area is taken. This impression serves as a precise model for crafting the custom dental crown.
Temporary Crown: While the permanent crown is being custom-made at a dental laboratory, a temporary crown may be placed on the prepared tooth to protect it and maintain appearance and function.
Crown Fabrication: Skilled dental technicians at the dental laboratory use the impressions to create the custom dental crown. The crown is designed to match the size, shape, and colour of the patient’s natural teeth.
Crown Fitting: Once the custom crown is ready, you return to our dental clinic for the fitting. The dentist ensures that the crown fits properly and comfortably, making any necessary adjustments.
Permanent Placement: After the fitting, the final dental crown is permanently cemented onto the prepared tooth. The cement creates a secure bond between the crown and the tooth.
Bite and Comfort Check: The dentist will check your bite to ensure it’s even and comfortable with the new crown in place. Any necessary adjustments will be made to ensure a proper fit.
Post-Placement Care: The dentist will provide instructions on post-placement care, including proper oral hygiene and any dietary restrictions.
Follow-Up Appointments: You’ll schedule follow-up appointments with the dentist to monitor the stability and performance of the dental crown, making any necessary adjustments.

How is tooth-coloured fillings being used on back teeth?
Typically, it takes two dental appointments. The first appointment involves preparing the tooth and taking impressions, while the second appointment involves placing the crown after it’s fabricated in a dental lab.
I recently had to have root canal , Gillene and Sharon were great. They made sure I was ok all the way through each appointment, and put me at ease with what was a very long procedure.Gillene is very professional and good at what she does and Sharon is friendly and helps to try and keep your mind off whats happening.
I was very nervous and the dentist put me at ease and made me feel very comfortable. She explained every step of the treatment so there was no surprises. Did everything in her power to help me and am very grateful for all she did and recommend to everyone. Thank you very much.
I joined this dental practice last month after succumbing to pain and a broken back tooth. It's been (i'm ashamed to say) a good few years since i've had a check up, and from my first appointment i felt totally at ease, all the staff are lovely. Had a mighty filling today, and Sinead and the girls (sorry i didn’t catch their names) were brilliant! So nice to have found somewhere like this. Highly recommend!
Been to this dentist since I’ve grown up, many years, however recently had Sophie and Sharon doing my treatment, I had a extraction treatment and both of these dentists put me at ease, they helped my nerves, talked me through the process and was very professional and gave advice on quitting smoking and help. credit to them due. Thank you Sharon and Sophie.
From emergency appointments to fillings and root canal treatment, each visit I’ve had to Anderson and Broadberry has always been positive. This has been a result of the professionalism and genuine care for patients from the members of staff that work at the practice. I’d like to specifically thank Sophie and Sharon for making each appointment go smoothly keeping me calm when carrying out dental procedures and ensuring they’re as pain free as possible.
Been coming here for years and have always been satisfied with the treatment and staff whom are all really friendly and professional too . On a recent visit I paid for some treatment which didn’t work how it should have , but I want to say thank you for all the help in rectifying the problem from all the staff . I would also like to mention a gentleman called Iain cowie whom kept in touch through both text and calls to see if everything was working out as it should be . Once again thank you for the professional treatment which I received.
